The death of Mica Francis Miller, who passed away on April 27, 2024 in an apparent suicide, has been further illuminated by newly released documents. These records detail the coercive control and abuse allegedly exerted by her estranged husband, John Paul “JP” Miller, a man known as Pastor Miller.
At the time of her death, Mica Miller was in the midst of a contentious divorce with JP Miller. Documents obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests reveal a series of troubling incidents that paint a picture of severe coercive control and manipulation.
Mica’s attorney, Regina Ward, has listed numerous allegations against JP Miller, including isolating Mica from friends and family, depriving her of basic needs, and stalking. One incident report from June 23, 2022, details lewd text messages and obscene video calls made by JP Miller to a woman in New Jersey, fitting the broader context of abusive control tactics.
Financial manipulation also played a role in the alleged abuse. Mica was falsely accused of stealing $1,200 from the church’s mission funds, a tactic used to discredit and control her. Another incident involves JP Miller taking Mica’s car while she was involuntarily hospitalized, demonstrating his control over her mobility.
Tracking devices were found on vehicles used by Mica, according to reports from March 14 and March 26, 2024. This indicates she was being monitored closely. Public humiliation was another tactic used by JP Miller; on April 8, 2024, he posted a nude photo of Mica on Facebook, strategically blurring parts of the image to avoid legal repercussions but still degrading her publicly.
The documents also reveal spiritual and emotional abuse. Mica’s list of abuses includes instances where JP Miller allegedly used his position as a pastor to coerce her into various actions. There were repeated instances where he misused legal and law enforcement channels to exert control over her.
Witness testimonies from friends and family corroborate Mica’s claims of abuse, describing a consistent pattern of JP Miller’s controlling and dehumanizing behavior. In response to Mica’s case, advocates are pushing for “Mica’s Law” to provide law enforcement with better tools to recognize and act against coercive control.
